The Festival of Diwali

The joyous and vibrant festival of Diwali originally began as a harvest festival, meant to celebrate and give thanks for the last bountiful harvest before the winter descended. One of the most significant Hindu festivals, celebrated by a vast majority of people in India, is also known as “Deepawali”. The word ‘Deepavali’ comes from two words, “avali” which means ‘rows’ and “deep” which means “lamps”, which together mean — ‘rows of lamps’. Rows and rows of lit clay lamps adorn millions of Indian households where people celebrate this ‘festival of light’, symbolizing the victory of good over bad.

 

 

Throughout the lengths of this vast nation, Diwali holds different meanings for various communities. For example, in Northern India, Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to his home Ayodhya after a long exile of 14 years. Whilst in the Southern part of India, the festival of Diwali signifies the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon god ‘Narakasura’. No matter what Diwali stands for to each community, it is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India with its own set of traditions and a recipe for fun and galore!

 

The Celebrations of the Day

The festival of Diwali actually spans over 5 days! The first day of Diwali is known as ‘Dhanteras’ when people start with a thorough cleaning of their houses ans renovating their residential and work places. This is done to welcome the deity of wealth and prosperity, ‘Goddess Lakshmi’ into their homes and to bless their lives. It is also considered good luck to purchase precious items like Gold, silver, or metal utensils on this day.

The second day is the ‘Choti Diwali’ or the day prior to the main festival. The second day is spent decorating one’s homes and offices. Traditionally earthen lamps filled with mustard oil are lit around the house, covering all entrances and also lining the entire perimeter. In most houses, ‘Rangolis’, a kind of traditional folk art is drawn at the entrance of the house and is adorned with flowers petals, lamps, and colored powders.

 

 

The third day is the most significant day of the festival as on this day the deity Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped. A special prayer is offered to the deity and post the ‘puja’ (prayer ceremony), the family gets together to exchange gifts and to indulge in the festivities with a lively feast of Diwali-special delicacies, sweets, and fireworks!

 

 

The fourth day is spent by visiting one’s relatives, close friends, and exchanging gifts and sweets with each other followed by grand feasts. This is done to extend one’s best wishes to family and friends and hoping that they have a prosperous year ahead.

 

The fifth and the last day of Diwali is known as ‘Bhai-Dooj’, a festival solely meant to foster the bond and affection between a brother (known as ‘Bhai’) and his sister. Small rituals are performed wherein the sister prays for her brother’s well-being. Gifts are exchanged and the festivities follow to mark the end of Diwali.

 

Over the centuries, Diwali is no longer a Hindu festival but with different branches of significance to different communities, it has become a major national festival which the whole nation looks forward to!
