Ginger tea is an herbal tea made from the root of the Ginger plant. It has a characteristic taste – spicy, subtle sweetness, and soothing. There are several health benefits to drinking Ginger tea such as reducing nausea, improving digestion, and relieving a sore throat and colds. It is versatile and can be enjoyed hot or cold with honey or sugar to taste. You can use fresh ginger root or ginger tea bags and ‘herb’ this tea with lemon or mint, to get a cup of tea that will refresh you from the inside out.

 

A piping hot cup of ginger tea is certainly a treat. The best time to drink this tea is in the morning for an invigorating kick-start to the day. This tea can however be enjoyed at any time of the day. Ginger tea is also called ginger water when all you have is water infused with fresh ginger! Prepare a big batch and store it in the refrigerator. Use as you please! Here are some delightfully easy recipes for ginger tea:

Basic Fresh Ginger Tea

Ingredients:

    • One-inch piece of fresh ginger
    • A cup of hot water
    • Honey or sugar (depending on your preference)

    Instructions: Wash and peel the ginger root. Slice thinly or grate. Put this into a mug and pour the hot water, cover and steep for 5 minutes or longer if you want a stronger taste. Strain the tea and add honey or sugar to taste. You could cool this mixture and drink it with ice too.

    Fresh Ginger Lemon Tea

    Ingredients:

      • One-inch piece of fresh ginger
      • A cup of hot water
      • Slices of Lemon
      • Honey or sugar (depending on your preference)

      Instructions:  Wash and peel the ginger root. Slice thinly or grate. Put this into a mug, add lemon slices and pour the hot water, cover and allow these to steep for 5 minutes or longer depending on how strong a taste you prefer. Strain the tea and add honey or sugar to taste. Enjoy your fresh ginger lemon tea hot or iced.

      Fresh Ginger Mint Tea

      Ingredients:

        • One-inch piece of fresh ginger
        • A cup of hot water
        • Sprigs of Mint
        • Honey or sugar (depending on your preference)

        Instructions: Wash and peel the ginger root. Slice thinly or grate. Put this into a mug, add washed fresh mint leaves and pour the hot water, cover and allow these to steep for 5 minutes or longer depending on how strong a taste you prefer. Strain the tea and add honey or sugar to taste. Your soothing and refreshing ginger mint tea is ready to drink - hot or iced!

        Fresh Ginger Honey Tea

        Ingredients:

          • One-inch piece of fresh ginger
          • A cup of hot water
          • A Tablespoon of Raw Honey
          • Honey or sugar (depending on your preference)

          Instructions: Wash and peel the ginger root. Slice thinly or grate. Put this into a mug, pour the hot water, cover and allow these to steep for 5 minutes or longer depending on how strong a taste you prefer. Strain the tea and add honey, and stir well to enable the honey to mix properly. Your healthy and refreshing ginger honey tea is ready - drink it hot or iced!

          To Peel or Not to Peel – The Ginger!

          Peeling the piece of ginger or not is usually a matter of personal choice. Sometimes the peel is dry and thick, and in such a case, peeling the ginger would be preferable. Tip: use a spoon to peel the piece of ginger – it’s fast and easy! If not peeling, ensure that you wash the piece of ginger well to rid it of grime and dirt.

          This spice has been around for centuries, is an active ingredient in traditional medicine, and is used to relieve upset stomach, nausea, constipation, sore throats, coughs, and headaches. Ginger has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties that make it a great reliever for several ailments.
